UN International Decade for People of African Descent

Scholarships in Honor of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent 2015-2024

In proclaiming this Decade, the international community is recognizing that people of African descent represent a distinct group whose human rights must be promoted and protected. Around 200 million people identifying themselves as being of African descent live in the Americas. Many millions more live in other parts of the world, outside of the African continent.” – United Nations

For the third year, Artists Building Capacity as World Citizens is supporting the United Nations International Decade for People of African Decent 2015 – 2024 by offering four Call for Art and Race Amity Conference scholarships on the theme of “Race Amity: Finding Our Paths in Bridging the Racial Divide”.

Scholarships will assist four recipients to attend the 2019 National Center for Race Amity Conference in Quincy, MA in November 2019, and the creation of an original work of art in response to the conference for presentation in January 2020. Scholarship recipients will be announced in October 2019.

In prior years ABC-WC scholarships have been awarded for these initiatives:

  • 2018 – The development and production of a dramatic performance “Black My Story, Not His’Story” by Kevin Wade Mitchell
  • 2017 – Travel to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the development and presentation of “Black Towns in 19th-century America” by Brad Randolph, and Kevin Wade Mitchell.

ABC World Citizens is an educational, networking and small project scholarship resource for creative people in their efforts to learn, consult and reflect upon universal environmental, human rights and development goals for the purpose of expressing that new insight, directly or indirectly, in their creative work and community service. We look forward to this collaboration and journey through history and culture and the inspiration that comes from this experience.
